The Haida Group
The Haida lived in the in the southern end of Alaska's peninsula. They came to Alaska from Canada in the 1700s. The Haida built fabulous canoes out of the lush forest resources. They also built strong clan houses with peaked roofs. Several people lived in the clan houses.

Gold RushAfter the United States bought Alaska, some brave pioneers started businesses. Fish made the businesses grow ,but the fish did not attract people, gold did. In 1896, the discovery of gold in Yukon caught peoples' attention. The easiest way to get to this site was to go on a boat. When people got there they were all greedy to get wealthy.

The Tlingit Group
The Tlingit lived on Alaska's panhandle. they used their native American skills to trade with other native American groups. The Tlingit wanted to travel across the land to trade with native American groups . They were getting ready to travel across the Pacific Ocean to trade with a native American group. The trip was going to be 1,000 miles long.
